10 Best Couples Photoshoot Poses

Preparing for your couples photoshoot can be nerve-wracking, especially if you're not used to being in front of the camera. Whether you're taking your engagement photos or honeymoon photos, it's important that you feel comfortable throughout your photoshoot. As your photographers, we will generally guide you to make sure your captured moments are candid. But to help you feel less awkward on the day, we've put together 10 couples photoshoot poses to take inspiration from.

1. Hug From Behind

One of the common couples photoshoot poses is the hug from behind which is really sweet when done right. The key to having more candid movement is to look down or at each other while swaying side to side instead of staying still and looking directly at the camera. Don't be afraid to take turns kissing on the cheek, head or shoulders too!

There are a few variations of the hug from behind that you can do depending on what you're comfortable with:

  1. Sneak up from behind - One partner can sneak up from behind and you both fall forward in your hug. This is the perfect setup for a surprise proposal!

  2. Lift and sway or spin - If you're comfy with lifts, one partner can pick the other up and sway or spin them around. This variation will bring out all the laughter and fun!

  3. Hug from behind while sitting - This is one of the best couples photoshoot poses where you can play with levels. One partner can hug the other from behind where one (or both) of you are sitting on a platform.

2. Lay On Your Partner’s Lap

This is one of the couples photoshoot poses where it's very important to get comfy because if not, it will definitely show in the photos! For this pose, one partner sits up while the other lies on their side or back. This is perfect for cuddling and you can even bring along some props. Have a picnic, read a book or take Polaroid selfies. Bring anything that reflects the hobbies you share!

3. Lay Down

If you don't want to lie down directly on the ground, don't forget to pack a blanket for this pose! Try laying side by side while holding hands or have one partner lay on top of the other. And for some chaotic but beautiful movements, try rolling around!

4. Airplane

For this pose, you'll have to face each other and alternate between leaning side to side and pushing in and away from each other. It can feel a little silly at first, but we promise you'll get used to it! A few variations for the airplane are:

  1. Standing back to back

  2. Having one of you standing behind the other

  3. Running

The goal is to get you interacting and giggling with each other. And if you want to show off your ring, the airplane is one of the best couples photoshoot poses to do it!

5. Lifts

It can be tricky to make lifts look candid. But with a bit of technique, you can really pull it off! Here are three life variations that we love:

Hug Lift

With this, the lifter locks their arms together around the liftee. They can do this around the waist or under the butt depending on height. After, the lifter can stand and swing or spin around in a circle while the liftee tosses their hair back or kicks up one leg at a time.

Koala Lift

The Koala lift requires the liftee to wrap their legs around their partner. Kind of like a eucalyptus tree! And with this pose, you can't go wrong with going in for a kiss too!

Baby Lift

The Baby lift is exactly what it sounds like. Pick your partner up under their arms and knees like you would a baby. You can have a lot of fun with this pose by spinning around or dipping up and down. This pose does take a lot of energy but it's definitely worth it!

6. Sitting Side by Side

Simply sit side by side and lean into your partner. This is one of the best couples photoshoot poses where you can really get comfy and intimate together. Swing both of your legs over your partner's, go in for a kiss or trace your hands over their features. If you're facing away from the camera, you can also take turns resting your head on your partner's shoulder while looking back at the camera.

On Maui, this pose is great to play around with, especially as there are different landscapes. You can sit side by side on rock formations by the beach, on cafe chairs, on the edge of the pool or on the grass!

7. Kissing With Your Teeth

You might be thinking what the heck does this mean? How can anyone kiss their partner with their teeth? Whenever we ask our couples to do this, they also look at us funny but we promise it's gold!

You want your kisses captures in your photos but puckering your lips might not be the most flattering. So, to have your kiss captured while still showing intimacy, smile as you lean into your partner's mouth.

8. Lean In

It might sound obvious to stay close to your partner but sometimes the gap between you both can look empty in photos if you naturally leave space between your heads. So to close that gap, lean into each other. The goal is to be so close that your partner looks a little blurry. Then, take turns sharing kisses, closing your eyes to rest and looking at the camera.

9. Cuddle Train

For the cuddle train, you first need to decide who will be the big spoon and the little spoon. Then have the big spoon sit down while the little spoon sits between their legs and leans back. The little spoon can even swing their legs over one side. This is a cute pose that leaves your hands free to interact by caressing and hugging your partner.

10. Push and Play

Push and play is one of the perfect couples photoshoot poses that adds playful movement and connection. To do this, stand facing each other, grab your hands and start pushing. You can spin around, push in and out and just stumble around and have fun!
